The Magic And Luck In The Game

It is the last play in the game and you know your receiver is out there but you are unable to see him clearly through the crowd of defensemen. Presto it is a completed pass for the game-winning touchdown! You show up at your first PGA Tournament, not sure where to park, and presto you end up walking away with the top money prize and trophy! The bases are loaded with two men out and you are holding the lowest batting average in the league, and presto you knock it out of the park for the game winner! How do we manage to make these extraordinary plays happen? Could it be magic or luck?

Athletes are motivated to be better players than their competitors through hard work and ambition. We spend countless hours on improving our own score or performing better than others at the game. We all work hard at our game and try our best to accomplish the impossible play or feat for recognition and to stand out in front of our competitor. The whole routine is practiced over and over until we have it right. The greatness in our game or sport seems to come and go and only to return just like magic. The impossible feats, plays, and the comeback from behind, return time and time again and a star is born. It almost seems magical at times. Was the performance magic, luck, or a combination of both?

Look at golf as an example. Notice how they managed to play an outstanding game or golf shot? After all their hard work and many hours of practice why is it almost impossible to repeat this same performance all the time, especially when they need it the most? Golfers have pulled off miraculous shots from impossible situations and places they have never seen before, after trailing others for several days to comeback and win the game. How does this near impossible play arise in games played by athletes?

We can think of it as magic by the power of influence on being a wizard at making the near impossible happen. This is probably not always the case for most of us because there are very few of us that practice the unusual circumstance that calls for the impossible undertaking. A lot of us have the fear of stepping outside the box and failing at something people may say was ridiculous to try. In order to be a great magician, you must practice in order to escape or create the impossible trick. Great magicians practice the impossible all the time. They have no fear and enjoy entertaining the crowd, regardless of failure. We know in some performances it is just an illusion, but in most sports it is real magic by the power of influence in making it happen. If you practice the impossible, even though someone has discouraged you or you have created a negative moment, something deep down inside will make it happen.

Depending on how often you play and how you practice, some plays are by pure luck. Nobody pulls off miraculous plays by practicing once a year. This is luck with a combination of circumstances created by choosing the right club with the right lie, along with the right golf swing in using the game of golf as an example.

Stop and think how many times you have been out playing the game or trying what seemed impossible and it happened. Through many efforts of trial and error and hard work, it came together out of the blue and what seemed impossible was no more. Did you not feel a sense of calm and satisfaction as if something magical happened? Is it possible through constant practice, including stepping outside the box and practicing what if scenarios in your efforts, it creates an impossible reality?

The New York Giants 2008 Super Bowl quarterback Manning seemed to disappear from a crowd of swarming New England Patriots defensemen with the help of his team players, and appears standing amongst crowded players completing a long pass to his receiver. His receiver Tyree caught the football with one hand pinning the ball to his helmet and holding on for the completion. This single outstanding play moved the Giants forward to comeback from behind to win the Super Bowl. Was this Manning magic, Tyree magic, or luck for both that lead the Giants to a Super Bowl victory?

Is it possible magic and luck in the game could be the kid in all of us who enjoys the game at a high degree, wanting something bad enough deep down inside we move ourselves towards the right place at the right time. Is this what in turn makes the near impossible things happen?
